Day 3/4: Eidfjord
142 Miles

Journey to Eidfjord on the E34, through tunnels, along winding roads and high into the mountains across the backbone of Norway down to Odda. From here Route 13 hugs the deep blue waters of the Hardanger Fjord which divides into about 20 smaller fjords of which Sorfjorden adn Eidfjorden are the best known. The scenery constantly changes between fjord and mountains, dramatic waterfalls and glaciers, fruit gardens and green fields.

For instant refreshment, stop at one of the numerous smaller waterfalls that tumble by the roadside and dare yourself to step underneath.

Once there, visit the Hardanger Folk Museum, take a fjord cruise for an unforgettable experience or visit the Hardangervidda Nature Centre. There's good trout fishing in the rivers Eio and Bjoreio and you can fish for salmon in Eidfjord Lake. The local tourist office has rowboats and bicycles for hire.

Day 5/6: Bergen
112 Miles

A wonderful drive on Route 7 following Samjafjord to Bergen. This ancient city looms large in Viking sagas and until the 14th Century it was the seat of the medieval kingdom of Norway. The Hanseatic merchants established a major trading post and the characteristic wooden buildings dominate the old harbour area.

Bryggen (the Wharf) is listed by UNESCO as one of the world's most significant examples of medieval architecture. Today it's a honeycomb of workshops and restaurants where you can savour the atmosphere, pick up fine clothes and dine on fresh seafood.

Visit the Bryggen museum with exhibits of ceramics, runic inscriptions and everyday artefacts of daily life in the Middle Ages.

Day 7/8: Stavanger

Enjoy the scenic drive down the western coast on the E39 through Stord and Haugesund to Stavanger. Old Stavanger is Northern Europe's largest and best preserved wooden house settlement where more than 170 houses built in the 1700s and early 1800s are preserved and renovated. Great bars, cafes and restaurants abound.

Lysefjord, an hour's drive east outside of Stavanger, is one of the most memorable experiences this region offers including the extraordinary Pulpit Rock. For a unique driving experience, the hairpin ascent by road from Lysebotn and the magnificent mountain ranges beyond is a classic.
